Online shopping plays a key role as we prepare for the holidays. Online shopping has led to an increase in counterfeit and stolen products being sold by fraudsters and thieves.
Counterfeiting puts all of us at risk. The AARP offers some tips for avoiding fake and stolen gifts this holiday season, including:
- Choose Only Reputable Sellers - Brand-name products should be purchased directly from national retailers. Take a close look at third-party vendors' user reviews and policies when considering marketplace sellers on Amazon, Walmart and other online sites.
- Find Sites that Guarantee Authenticity - When shopping for luxury goods or high-end items like shoes and handbags, look for retailers that offer authentication programs. It is also a good idea to check manufacturing and brand websites for guides on ensuring you are buying authentic items.
- Look Out for Red Flags - When shopping online, the adage still holds: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. It is a warning sign if the prices are too low and if the site appears to be unaffiliated with the authentic retailer.
- Use a Credit Card - In the case of disputes over authorized charges, credit cards tend to offer you more protection.
- Report Bogus Seller and Fake Products - To help others and law enforcement agencies, report fake sellers to the Ohio Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission.
