Ransomware Graphic

Increasingly, businesses are targeted by ransomware attacks, with hackers taking advantage of smaller-sized firms due to their lack of resources. Ransomware is malware that encrypts your computer files until a ransom is paid. Here are some tips on how to stop criminals from infiltrating your computer system to protect you and your business:

  • Keep Software Up to Date - Update your software regularly so your programs run smoothly, and security patches and upgrades can be applied.

  • Employ Multiple Security Measures - Implement multiple security tools such as firewalls, anti-virus software, anti-malware software, spam filters and cloud data loss prevention to reduce your business' risk.

  • Increase Staff Awareness – Negligence or human error is often the weak link in a company's data and system security. Training your team on cybersecurity awareness is one of the easiest ways to thwart attacks.

  • Limit Access - Provide minimal access to files, programs, and accounts. Review routinely who has access and revoke permissions for team members no longer part of the business or working on a specific project.

  • Use Strong Authentication – Multifactor authentication requires a user to provide more than one way to access a network or device. For example, a code could be texted to a separate device, or users use a fingerprint in addition to a password.

  • Back-Up Everything, Separately – Maintain frequent backups of your system and other essential files, and disconnect the backups from your network. You can restore your system's previous state if it is compromised.
