Social media keeps people connected. Fraudsters use social media more often today to reach consumers, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Last year, one in four people lost money to fraudulent advertisements, posts, or messages.

Here are a few steps to protect yourself:

  • Limit who can see your posts on social media
  • Opt out of targeted advertising
  • Verify messages claiming to be from friends about opportunities or money
  • Be wary of anyone eager to connect and start a relationship
  • Check out a company for scams or complaints before buying
